Today, I met a woman named Chris who works here. She is very fun - she has a tattoo on her back that says "Nerdy" in cursive. I love it! I went with her to the tour at DMDII, and she told me how much she loves working at Catalyze Chicago. She said, "everybody is the right amount of kooky, but in different ways, which makes it such a special environment to work in."
Chris invited me to a hackathon that is happening in a few weeks called the StartupBus. Over the course of three days, people from all over the country travel in large buses to Nashville, TN. They form teams within their buses to come up with and implement startup ideas that they will compete with when they reach Nashville. It's extremely high-stress, but with amazing outcomes. Chris said that when she did it two years ago, it changed her life. She said that you wouldn't believe the amount of progress you're able to make in just a weekend. A bunch of people from Catalyze will be going, and their bus is the only hardware bus in the event. It's getting a lot of attention, because people are thinking "you can't do that" and they're like "hell yes we can!" The event is $300 per person which is a lot to think about, especially with an unpaid internship. But I want to go so badly and I know the experience would absolutely be worth it. It would be an accomplishment I could talk about for years. Chris has a contact at Indiegogo and said that we could try to get funding for me to go.
I talked to my parents about it, and my dad agreed that it's an opportunity I cannot pass up. I really hope the funding works out.
